Aims

Geography helps you to make sense of the world around you. It is not only up-to-date and relevant, it is one of the most exciting, adventurous and valuable subjects to study today. So many of the world’s current problems boil down to geography, and need the geographers of the future to help us understand them.

We have one key aim here in Geography… we want to give you some powerful geographical knowledge which will hopefully equip you to be global citizens. We want you to be able to confidently solve a variety of problems and issues, take some leadership, listen to others, and show a general appreciation for the world and everything that connects us.

How will Geography help me?

Geography is a broad based academic subject which will open up options for you in your future. Employers and universities see geography as a ‘robust’ academic subject rich in skills, knowledge and understanding. As a subject linking the arts and the sciences it is highly flexible in terms of what you can combine it with.

You will find geographers working in a wide range of jobs, from the City to planning, working in the environment to travel and tourism, or in international charities or retail. Studying geography can help young people achieve careers that are professionally and financially rewarding and also enjoyable.

Do not just take our word for it. The importance of the subject to your education is evident.

Key Stage 3

Here in Geography we are keen to expose students to real-life and complex issues from the moment they join Omagh High School. Our lessons are designed to be engaging and relevant whilst providing students with a wealth of opportunities to develop lifelong skills that can be used in everyday life. More importantly, we want our lessons to be interesting and enjoyable whilst helping all students to grow in confidence.
