Aims

  • To maintain and/or stimulate student curiosity, interest and enjoyment in health and social care and to acquire knowledge and understanding of the subject with the skills in which to evaluate topics covered.

  • To encourage students to open, enquiring minds and to perceive health and social care in the context of a wider body of knowledge, vocabulary and skills to provide a sound basis for lifelong learning and the pursuits of personal interest.

  • To employ a variety of teaching methods and resources that allow all pupils irrespective of their gender, ethnic origin, academic ability etc. to have equal access to Health and social care.

  • To cultivate in student’s sense of belonging.

  • To enable students to understand and confidently use the terminology specific to the subjects.

  • To encourage student development of informed opinions.

  • To support the implementation of the statement on ‘Shared Values’ and to enable pupils to develop a range of desirable personal qualities such as safety awareness, politeness, perseverance, concern for others, initiative and independence.

Objectives of the Social Studies Department

These objectives relate to the aims of the Social Studies Department in Omagh High School and are intended to show how the aims are actually put into practice. They run parallel with the whole school objectives.

  • Staff should provide a variety of experiences/activities during a unit of work and during a lesson if possible employing teaching methods and resources that allow all students irrespective of their gender, ethnic origin, academic ability etc. to have equal access to religious education and to experience success and enjoyment in their work.

  • All students follow the same scheme of work and staff should encourage pupils to learn any technical terms specific to the subject area through the use of a glossary and provided dictionaries. The schemes of work give guidance on progression, continuity and consistency within the department.

  • Staff should encourage students to apply their knowledge and skills in various situations using different creative opportunities for students to do so. For example, computers, video, audiotape, extended writing, illustrations, diagrams, graphs, questionnaires, role play, story boards.

  • Students should be able to undertake research in health and social care with guidance of staff.

  • There should be opportunities for individual and group activities, including group discussion, investigation, and research.

  • Key skills which includes written, oral and numerical will always be encouraged.

  • Staff should aim to establish closer links with other departments in the school.

  • Students are encouraged to share their experiences and culture with others in order to enhance the quality of learning that they experience.

  • Students should be able to follow both written and verbal instructions.

  • Lessons should be conducted in a secure, supportive and disciplined manner that demonstrates mutual respect.

  • Students have regular homework that has a direct relationship with the course and a clear purpose.

  • Staff should praise pupils for working well and encourage them to work to their full potential within the subject.

  • There is a system of assessment in place consistent with the formal requirements for reporting in the school and when and where appropriate.

The GCSE in Health and Social Care has been designed to prepare students for progression to employment and/or further training in the health, social care and early year’s sectors through the development of knowledge, skills and understanding needed for work in these sectors.
